Authors Visit the class

First off I'd like to say YAY! I'm on time with my blog! Hopefully doing the 2 I missed will help my poor grade. So this week we talked about the story "Family Gems". Great book! I really enjoyed reading it and I consider buying it for my mom for Christmas! FYI my favorite holiday! The book is hilarious and I can think of people in my life that relate to the characters. I was so excited that the authors came to our class. A lot of things really surprised me. I was surprised when they said which one was Ruby and which one was Jewell. I also had no idea that they wrote the letters. The whole time I thought the letters were wrote by the really people and that everything was true. WHAT A SHOCKER. I wasn't however surprised when they said it was difficult to get the book published. I had a feeling. They talked about either writing a prequel or a sequel. I think I like to read a prequel. I think it would be better to here about what happened when they were all growing up together. I mean to be honest I think they are a little old and I would hate to hear that one of them die in the sequel... to depressing. There wasn't much in the news but I did hear about the math teacher that got murdered. That's so sad and scary. The only other news I have is that the Zhu Zhu pets that are so popular this year are safe! haha, good news to me because I'm getting my niece one for Christmas. Well, that's all. See ya in class tomorrow.

This is for Nov 30th b.c no class on the 24.

Well I had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and I ate lots of yummy food. I also began reading the book "Family Gems" Its a really cute book and I'm glad we are reading it. It's about two sisters that are writing back and forth about whats going on in their life. One lives in a trailer in Kentucky and the other lives in a condo in Arizona because of her husbands medical condition. They basically talk about drama and their family. It's funny because my family and I are alike is some ways. The book really caught my attention when the first line talked about someones pussy freezing off. haha! Another thing that was funny is when they talked about the new dog they got and how he has an alarm clock. The other sister said something like, I didn't know dogs could tell time. That was hilarious. I also liked the part where they talked about the paper towels and how whats her name wets her pants sometime and she said they were the "quick picker upper" haha! The book is very cute and I'm sure my mom would enjoy reading it. I'm really excited that the authors are coming to our class. I think it will be really interesting to here what they have to say. I haven't really watched the news lately but I do keep up with the drama on Tiger Woods. I also recall us talking about the Argentina passing away because of butt implants. WOW... Well have a good day.

This one is for Nov. 16

This week we started on the Family Gem's book and we were to also read part 11. My group met at the house on Tues and we took a quiz on it. I had to talk about the "Fundamentalism on the Rise". In this article they talk about the two levels of fundamentalist religion and how they are a problem to women. They talk about how "men dominate women and control reproductive decisions" and "issues of women's rights and position in society becomes the battlefield on which power struggles over cultural identity". The problem for women is that fundamentalism is a on the rise worldwide. They are reasserting male dominance and evolving into tools for civic repression, suite control and violence. Fundamentalism is "a religious movement that demands a strict adherence to a set of basic principles". A few things that I remember that fundamentalist movements did to women are that women's freedom, education, political positions, access to abortion and birth control is denied. They also talk about the methods the fundamentalist movements use to gain power and that is education, media, and political power. This was an okay article to read. I really learned a lot.

So I don't have much to talk about other than we went to our community service on wed. and Thurs and I really enjoyed it. We through a Halloween party for the children and handed out treat bags. They were so much fun to be around. Our supervisor is very interesting and we learned a lot about what Kaleidoscope was all about. We will being going back again this weekend. YAY!!! 5 days till HALLOWWEEENNN!

Hello, This past week was the most frustrating week yet. I had way to many things going on. I didn't have to meet at the house last week but our talk in class was pretty good. We talked about how to do our paper and the reading Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power. When i think about erotica, I think sex and porn. But the article says it can be anything flashy, art or lyrics. It's both physical and emotional. It the intro to sex. They say erotic is a big ball of emotion and electricity and porn is emotionless. She uses margarine because it's white and then the yellow spreads. Erotic is not nasty and everyone should get in touch.
We watch the Rachel Madow show and they talked about a girl name Jamie Johns and she was drugged and raped in Iraq she was part of the army. She can't sew because of what she signed. They are trying to have a law to the constitution and people actually voted against it but not one of them would go on the show and tell why.
Lastly, we watched a slide show of a bunch of nakedness. By watching these pictures I started to see how badly they degrade girls and how they think that girls are nothing but toys basically. I also thought it was nuts that guys have a thing for Innocent young girls and like "baby" stuff. Ew!!! Other than that class went well and can't wait to see everyone tomorrow!

Yah Women Studies!!!

Last week was an interesting week. Groups 1 & 2 met at the house and we had some fun and entertaining stories. We were to have read part 5. The article that stuck out the most to me was Rape as Social Murder. This was a sad but true story. In this article she talked about her personal experience with rape. While she got raped she talked about how the rapist told her why he was doing it and after he offered her a ride to the hospital and said she didn't have to move that he would keep her safe and tell her what type of window locks she should have. "He blamed me for the beating, and then acted as my protector and caretaker" Scary! The author had mentioned that "not challenging the rapist was a mechanism of self-defence". I believe this because if you don't fight back then the rapist gets what he wants and then will leave. The reason the author called this "social murder" is because the rapist has mad her believe that it was her fault, that she did something to deserve it and just being violated makes you feel dead.
Another story that was interesting was Trends in Delinquent Girls' Aggression and Violent Behavior: A Review of the Evidence. This story talked about the pattern in girls delinquency. They talk the increase in arrest for violent chimes girls carrying weapons, robbery, theft and assault. They think its because "the aggression and violence has historically been ignored". The also think that sexual and physical abuse could also be a reason of of this. Over all the article had a lot of stats and that girls' behavior hasn't changed it's just been ignored.
The last article, Making Feminist Sense of an American Military Scandal was about the American women and men that were prison guards were humiliating and torturing Iraqi men in prison. They were making the men pile naked and took pictures of the women smiling. This was really disturbing to me because it was the women that were torturing the men and treating them like a joke.
I also remember someone talking about the 6 year old boy in the balloon and I CANNOT believe he wasn't really in the balloon. INSTEAD he was hiding in the attic of the house. THOSE PARENTS ARE NUTS... now they have to leave their child for 6 years all because they wanted a TV series out of it. PEOPLE THESE DAYS! Welps see ya in class Thurs.!

Women Lives

Hello! Last week I feel we had a good discussion in class. I enjoyed talking about the things in the news paper and the creepy guy that got arrested for taking pictures of the WKU cheerleaders. I also enjoyed talking about Britney Spears and her sweet new song! In part three I really liked the article 9 "Woman Sitting at the Machine, Thinking". This article really had me thinking at first. I had to read it a few times before I actually understood what it was about. When I read the article it talked about trying to type really fast and thinking at the same time about a bunch of different things. I couldn't possibly do that. This poem is about a lady that works and works and works and gets very little money for it and they don't really care about her. Another article was the "Not Just a Paper Doll". This article I really liked to read as well. In class I liked how we talked about the models and how they are so small and that they have to sell them self. They have to always lose weight and be a certain size to fit in. Also most models are female and that has a lot to do with what we talk about. When you think of a model you think "female" I liked a quote in this article, " It's all about selling yourself" This is true modeling is a challenge and you have to be the perfect size and height and basically give yourself away. Most models bodies are basically owned by an clients or agents and they have control on what you look like and your weight. The things girls do to model is crazy to me and I can't see why anyone would do it.
We talked about how girls also are easy to take what they can get. I personally am not that way but many girls get hired for less money because they know that they will not fight for more and take it. Where guys always want more. In the work force males get payed more then women but I feel that It has a lot to do with girls letting people push them around. They feel they have no power and should take what they get. A lot of businesses know a lot about those who apply for a job and if they find a single mother of 3 children they already think she will take what she can get because she needs a job. I don't think its fair at all. They shouldn't know your situations.
That's all I have today. Can't wait to see everyone in class tomorrow!!! :)

1st time at the house

This week was the first time my group met at the house. We had a very good conversation and yummy cookies. If we would have all read the material better it would have been easier to talk about. The first article we talked about was the poem "When I Was Growing Up". This was about a Chinese girl that longs to be white. She had a sister that was fair skinned and she was praised for her beauty. The little girl could speak English and spell correctly to fit in but found it hard to fit in. When she was growing up a white man took her out and then she wanted to be Chinese because they are known to be small and smart and that's what this guy liked about her. She then realized that's what she wanted to be and nothing else. I really liked this poem because people that are not white feel like they are so out of the box and try to do things to stand out when really if you think about whites are really the ones out of the box.
Another article we read was the one about hazing. I saw the videos about the girls on the powder puff football team and the upper class girls beat the under class girls on the team. Several girls had to go to the hospital and one had memory loss. I think this is absolutely crazy that they beat the other girls. Girls have always had the status of pretty little girls in a dress. I feel that now girls just want to be noticed. The go against what they are known for. Girls are mean and that article is a good example.
In class we talked about how you grow up is how you usually are when you get older. An example for that was if your parents fight all the time then you think that's how a relationship is supposed to be when you get older. I agree with that. We also watched a movie in class about how things have changed. The Ken barbie had small muscles and as the year went on the muscles got bigger. This is true and the media shows the what they think guys and girls should look like. I don't know why it would matter. Everyone is special in their own way.
Overall last week we had some good conversations and I look forward to this week.

(I wrote on my blog today instead of yesterday because I didn't have to meet at the house this week)

1st Week

So, Last week was long. I was extremely sick with the flu but still manage to read the article Women's Voices, Feminist Visions. I actually enjoyed this article. They talked about how women and men were pretty much equal. I highlighted a few things I thought were interesting. One in which, "Women and men are paid equal wages for work of comparable values." I have a hard time excepting the fact that men get paid more then women or that it's easier for a male to find a job then women. Another is "men are just as likely to ask for help as to give it." I hate it when we are on a family vacation and lost but my dad wouldn't even think about asking someone for help. One other thing was "parks at night can feel just as safe as they do during the day" I really liked this because I am the type to be scared walking alone at night and if it was like this more people would walk at night. Overall the article was good and had lots of interesting things.
I only made it to one class this week but I thought I was interesting that we are having small groups and meeting at different times to talk about our readings. I also found that it was nice we could have groups for our projects. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in class tomorrow. Bye!

A little about me!!!

Hello, My name is Carlee Fehribach. I'm 19 and from Evansville, IN. I have 4 older sisters Rachelle, Jamie, Shae, and Ashley. I'm an aunt to 2 beautiful baby girls, Ellie and Mallory. I've played soccer since I was 6 years old and also enjoy playing other sports for fun. I love to go boating with my family, grill out, and have camp fires. I love cheese, loud music, my roommate, the St. Louis Cardinals, kids, One Tree Hill, and shopping. I hate storms, sticks, mice, and being alone. My mom is my best friend and I tell her everything. I came to Western because 2 of my sisters went here and loved it. I also loved the campus. In this class I expect to learn about women and their rights while still having fun and getting a good grade. Here are a few things i expect from this university: I expect a good education that will land me a great job in the future; I expect to learn responsibility; and I'd love to meet life long friends. In life I expect to learn new things and accomplish many goals.
